CNSTHS triumphs in PAGASA Weather Observation tilt
Two students of Caloocan National Science and Technology High School won the first and third prize in the Weather Observation contest of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration held at the Science Garden, Quezon City, July 28 and 29.
With the theme, “One Science, One Resilient Nation”, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and PAGASA hosted the competition as part of the activities during the 2016 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) celebration from July 25 to 29.
Kirsten Denise Santos of Grade 10-Newton received a 5000 peso cash price and a plaque as the 1st place winner, while Cedric Tuason of Grade 10-Galilei received a 2000 peso cash price and a plaque as the 3rd place winner.
One of the most memorable things that happened that day, that I won’t ever forget is that I was able to use some of the actual materials that the meteorologist who work there have been using everyday” shared Santos. When asked about her experience from PAGASA.
The two got to be weather forecasters for a day when they did an actual weather observation using instruments like rain gauges, thermometer, wind indicators and evaporation rate measuring pan.
“One fascinating thing that I remember from the contest was talking to Mang Tani. We were able to talk with actual scientists. We also witnessed meteorologists’ work on the day to day basis” said Tuason.
The winners of the contest were judged according to the timeliness and accuracy of their observation, as well as their diligence and care for the weather instruments.
Participants also attended a seminar on the basic knowledge on weather observation with Dr. Marilyn Medina, Chief Meteorology Officer of PAGASA.
